East Bay Nature Riders

Nature RidersEvery day a biking, hiking, nature adventure on the Lamorinda trails.

We feel that summer should be summer, where kids are free to roam, explore and connect with the outdoors. At Nature Riders, we spend every day discovering the trails and woods of our extended backyards. A tribe of explorers, reminiscent of the movie Goonies, we go where we want to go guided by our curiosity, the landscape and the sun. We'll spend our time wandering by foot or bike, playing games and taking a break in the shade of trees and creeks. Learning about the world around us as we go.

We start and end each day at Moraga Commons where we learn nature crafts and play water games. From there we're off along the beautiful Lafayette/Moraga trail on our bikes and the world is our oyster (at least the Lamorinda area!) We'll bike and hike our way to exciting wilderness adventures each day, learning about ecology, outdoor skills and wilderness safety along the way.

Please Note This camp is hiking and biking intensive, so kids in Nature Riders need to be physically able to stay with the group.

The kids have lots of choices to make, and many of the activities are child directed. Our experienced and caring adult staff is there to guide the natural learning process of each individual participant.

Our Mission

At TrackersBAY, we help foster environmental stewardship by lessons aimed at teaching awareness of the natural processes that surround us. Our curriculum covers key aspects of biology, geology, botany, natural history, astronomy, storytelling, awareness, nutrition, all in fun activities that connect children with their local environment. We also teach youth the skills necessary to become hyper-competent adults, from understanding how to find their way around a forest and their community, to taking care of the landscape to how to construct things for themselves -- useful skills that they'll likely carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Ages 7-11 Nature Riders may include

Wilderness skills and safety Learn how to stay safe in the wilderness. Explore survival essentials like shelter, fire and water purification. Learn about poisonous plants and venomous animals.

Trail Biking and Hiking Learn how to be safe on the road and in town. Bike care/maintenance.

Wildlife discovery Get to know the habits and characteristics of local plants and animals. Discover ways to observe them without disturbance.

Foraging and Nature Crafts Identify and safely use many different wild plants. Feast on delicious blackberries and pears that are so common in the area. Weave a basket, make cordage out of natural fibers and much more.

Directions and Navigation Navigate our communities, read maps, and discover techniques for not getting lost in the woods. Learn about astronomy and the movement of the sun, moon, and earth.

Ecological learning and stewardship Form working relationships with the natural things around you, recognize the importance of whole eco-systems, learn how to give back when you take. Become a tribe and see the importance of the team.

Water Play at the Moraga Commons Great fun way to cool off on hot summer days

*Please understand that we pick our specific activities based on the group of children we are working with and other conditions. Therefore not every week will have each specific activity listed here as an example.

Our Philosophy for Learning & Living

A SmileWe help children to feel like that group of kids wandering country backyards 50 years ago: independent, tired, muddy, wet and happy from the woods and wild. We are acutely aware of full and real hazards of the out of doors after years of working in environmental education. We try to move away from the highly structured and limiting tolerances of conventional environmental education while keeping kids truly safe but not encapsulated from, or phobic of nature. We are deep patriots to the value of offering guided yet very free and transparent experiences for kids. We believe it is okay to be thirsty at times, cold at times, and wet at times. It builds empathy and care for the gifts of life. It fosters adventure and sincere accomplishment. We also believe it is critical to feel supported and cared for as they truly explore their passion and responsibility. And through a healthy life immersed in nature, they test the limits and great potential of the often untapped physical and emotional resiliency they possess.
