Bay Area Bluewater Scouts: Overnight Expedition

Teens these days are often bored with what they're told is possible. Young adults need to be doing things that are real, concrete and rich in skills. Skills taught through real life scenarios. They need to encounter situations that excite and push them to problem solve within a group. Teens want their comfort zones shaken.

Our most intensive youth maritime program yet, Bluewater Scouts educates and pushes teens in the time-honored classroom of the bay and open ocean with intensive maritime skills. Gain confidence and camaraderie as a team in close quarters on the last wild frontier.

We venture out aboard the 49’ Ketch “Windfish” and learn the essentials of sailing and navigation. We explore the coves and islands of the bay before heading out onto the open ocean. We live on the boat anchoring in a different location each night, rowing ashore to explore . The sun is our clock, the stars our compass, the wind our fuel. We also catch fish and crabs to supplement our diet.

We study the language and life the birds and marine mammals more deeply. Learn to decipher the tides, currents and weather patterns of the central California coast. Learn to Navigate first with your senses, wind, birds and stars. We also use modern navigation equipment such as GPS, radar, depth sounder and VHF radio. We teach you to plot a course and keep it.

All this plus reef sails, drop anchor, take watch, and batten down the hatches!!
